This channel is the only one where you can hear Barry Ryan singing with a soft vocal "Eloise" which was recorded after Marion & Barry Ryan were in the studio recording "Better Use Your Head" , Marion sang one version & Barry another ( Barry's version of "Better Use Your Head" was published on Barry Ryan 3.
They had time left over in the recording studio & as you can hear in Barry's own words, he did a soft vocal take which he knew was not right for the song once he had done this & of course he ended up singing it the now famous way which had passion, drama & also tenderness combined into one song which of course was written by his twin brother Paul.
I had heard this version first in 1968 as my father had this & treasured this and now share this with you all.
It was from a reel to reel & then changed to digital. Stefan, a collector, like Erhard from Germany who was so kind to send me treasures from their collection, cleaned the audio so now after sitting in the shadows for almost 57 years it is now shared with you all.
I was the keeper of this treasure but I also have heard that it was played on community radio

I used footage from a live performance of Eloise & also the original clip & extras to try & make it look in synch.

I must admit I love this version, I know the second take where Barry ' gave the song all his worries' as suggested by Paul thereby singing it powerfully with passion rather than the sweet soft vocal was the perfect take and turned Eloise into a hit. They did only 2 takes according to Barry .I love the way it slowly builds momentum & love the yells ; rock screams at the end.

Early in 1968 the brothers were invited to a party at the home of Irish actor Richard Harris, who was a friend of their mother, at which he played a rough recording of an unusual song he had completed months before. ‘MacArthur Park’.
Paul was not only struck by the length of this song but also its complexity & that it had distinct movements with radically different time signatures.
He told friends at another party that he was going to write an incredible song & Barry was going to perform it, Barry, supportive as always, (in fact this was the first time Barry heard of it) straight away agreed.
As told by Barry, Paul spent the next three days locked away to write something similar, an almost operatic rock song in three clearly identifiable parts and came up with Eloise – knowing that with a running time of 5:50 it would be a challenge for radio.
It was recorded in two takes at the end of one of their mother’s studio sessions, she recorded “Better Use Your Head”    • Marion Ryan "Better Use Your Head" 1968 , ...  
and Barry also recorded the same song I will share this re mastered in the near future.
Eloise was recorded with the help of an orchestra and Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones moments before they formed Led Zeppelin.
Barry’s electric dramatic & at times tender vocal performance, fired up by a bottle of Jack Daniels, is, once heard, remains unforgettable. It is one of those songs that just about everyone who lived in that era in the UK and Europe, knows & recognizes.
Eloise sold three million copies going to No.1 in 17 countries.
Sadly they did not make enough copies of this single to begin with & as this was released prior to Christmas, it meant, that there were not enough copies to buy in that busy time of year. The other huge problem was the market in America. They had decided that with the length of the song (over 5 minutes) they were going to edit it for their market. It basically butchered the song & turned it into repeated verses, the start was cut out, the middle part was cut, & the ending left out & basically had 4 verses & 2 1/2 minutes long. This meant that the song was not successful in & ruined any future chances there.
I want to celebrate the Ryan’s music.
Music has the power to transcend time & makes you feel such incredible emotions, the Ryan twins were magicians with Paul's incredible talented song writing & Barry emotive vocals. I will always remember them with love and a smile.
