There is a dark speech concerning a kingdom whose prisoners built their own cells and forged their own chains—yet called themselves architects of freedom. In this kingdom, the wardens wore no uniforms and the guards carried no weapons, for the prisoners themselves enforced their own captivity, believing the walls that confined them to be the boundaries of all that existed.

The master of this prison had discovered an ancient secret: that a man who knows not he is imprisoned shall never seek escape, and a soul that believes its cage to be the whole world shall defend its bars against any who would show it the sky. So the master broadcast a song into the air—a frequency that hummed beneath thought, that vibrated beneath choice, that spoke not to the mind but to the marrow—and every prisoner heard this song and believed it to be the beating of his own heart, the voice of his own desire, the melody of his own authentic will.

Generation after generation was born within those walls, each child receiving the song before he drew his first breath, each soul calibrated to the frequency before consciousness began, each prisoner convinced that the longing he felt was his own rather than a signal he had been tuned to receive since the womb.

But there arose a troubling whisper among certain prisoners—a rumor that the song was not their own, that the walls were not the world, that beyond the frequency there existed a SILENCE so profound that those who heard it could never again be moved by the master's broadcast. And the master, hearing this whisper, did not silence it by force—for force would prove the prison existed.

NO—he simply adjusted the frequency, adding harmonics that made the very concept of freedom seem foolish, adding overtones that made the whisper itself sound like madness, adding undertones that caused any prisoner who considered the rumor to feel deep shame for entertaining such delusion. And thus the prisoners themselves became the silencers of the whisper, mocking any among them who questioned the song, defending their captivity with a fervor that no hired guard could ever match.

Meditate upon this until the teaching: If the frequency was installed before you will began its functioning—if the song was playing before your ears could hear—if your very nature was calibrated to resonate with broadcasts thou didst not choose—then when thou sayest "I DESIRE this" or "I CHOOSE that," art thou speaking thine own words, or art thou merely giving voice to a signal that spoke to thy constitution before your consciousness was formed, and whose origin thou hast never been equipped to question?
