Replacing an inner and outer driveshaft

To replace the driveshaft the wheel must have enough ground clearance so that you can work correctly.

Remove the wheel.

Remove the driveshaft cotter pin.

Before removing the driveshaft nut, have someone press on the brake pedal to block the wheel.

Undo and remove the driveshaft nut.

Undo the supporting bolts for the inner driveshaft.

Release the brake pedal to free the wheel. Rotate the wheel half a turn.

Have the second person push down again on the brake pedal.

You can now remove all the bolts.

Once all the bolts have been removed, screw the outer driveshaft nut into place.

Hit the nut with the handle of a hammer to loosen the outer driveshaft.

Undo and remove the driveshaft nut.

Push the outer driveshaft towards the inner driveshaft, so that the outer one slides into the inner one.

Pivot the driveshaft head outwards, you can now remove the driveshaft.

To replace the inner and outer driveshafts you will need …

an outer driveshaft,

an inner driveshaft,

a central gaiter and its fixings.

You may want to change the cotter pin.

Grease the end of the driveshaft.

Centre the narrowest hole of the gaiter over the shaft.

Pull down gently on the gaiter until it arrives at the narrowest point of the shaft.

Then push it back upwards, until the lip comes out.

Your gaiter is in place.

Push the gaiter along the driveshaft as far as possible.

Lightly grease the splines.

Grease the inner driveshaft splines.

Insert one shaft inside the other.

Pull the gaiter forward and ensure the inner driveshaft is correctly inserted.

Now fix the gaiter in place, do not forget that it is fixed only on the inner driveshaft side.

Before mounting the driveshafts, grease the outer driveshaft splines and hub.

Position the driveshaft using the two bolts.

Screw on the two nuts without tightening them for the moment, this will help to keep the driveshaft in place.

Compress the inner and outer driveshafts.

Pivot the outer driveshaft towards the hub.

Insert the outer driveshaft into the hub, and screw into place the driveshaft nut.

Tighten it, but not too tightly for the moment.

Apply thread locking compound to the inner driveshaft bolts.

You can now tighten all the nuts and bolts.

The torque value for the inner driveshaft nuts and bolts is 6Kg.

With a torque wrench, make a first pass using a star pattern, and apply a torque value of 3Kg.

Now make a second pass with a torque value of 6Kg.

We can now tighten the outer driveshaft nut.

Attention, the manufacturer recommend a torque value between 35 and 40 Deca Newton metre.

Once the nut tighten, make sure that a groove in the nut is lined up with the hole in the hub to allow the passage of the cotter pin.

Bend the ends of the cotter pin around the driveshaft nut.

Now that the driveshaft is in place, we will grease the gaiter.

Pump 4 to 5 times.

You can now mount the wheel.

Safe driving.
