The typewriter ribbon spools and the ribbon reversal system on the vintage Imperial 60 are slightly different to the Imperial 66 and 65 machines I have encountered and this brief video is a demonstration of them in action with a brief explanation as to why I cut off the ribbon ring before winding new ribbon onto them. The last stretch of ribbon from the feed spool unlatches the flap insode the spool which is connected to a catch which protrudes from the bottom of the spool and pushes out an arm on the typewriter which triggers the ribbon reverse mechanism.

As a side note: I don't believe it's strictly necessary to have these spools to operate the machine but you do need them for automatic ribbon reversal (as shown in the video) and they look a darn sight cooler than any newer, plastic replacement spools. At any rate, if you have any of these original metal spools, please hang onto them and don't throw them away.
The reason I will be making somany Imperial typewriter videos is what appears to me to be the lack of information on these ubiquetous (in the Commonwealth, anyway) machines.
