Kids are largely capable of whatever we’re willing to teach them. Kids are not defective. By age 3 they have twice as many synapses or connections than an adult brain.They are literally wired to learn more and quicker than adults. Yet we constantly underestimate them.

My daughter is in Forest School (google it) twice per week. Engaging in risky play literally in the middle of the forest. The teachers have given them the tools to make good decisions. They test the stability of things before climbing on them. Before jumping off of some thing they look to make sure nothing is around that could hurt them when they land. They make predictions and test hypotheses. After a few weeks in this program, before jumping off of something my daughter would stop and say “let me see if this is a safe jump”. She was only 3.

Common sense and good decision making don’t suddenly appear because you hit a certain age. It is a skill that is developed over time with guidance, opportunity and practice.
