Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, born in 1853 in Mbacké-Baol, Senegal, was a revered Sufi Muslim leader, poet, and theologian who had a profound influence in West Africa. He founded the Mouride brotherhood (Muridiyya), emphasizing spiritual discipline, education, and work.
Under French colonial rule, Bamba’s growing influence led to his exile to Gabon in 1895. There, he continued his teachings and wrote many poetic works that reinforced his spiritual ideals. Upon his return, he founded the holy city of Touba, which became a spiritual center for the Mourides.
Bamba’s legacy endures through annual pilgrimages such as the Grand Magal of Touba, which commemorates his departure into exile.
