Recorded in the humid summer of 1976 at Tuff Roots Studio, Kingston, Voice of the Ancients was the first and only solo project by the enigmatic singer Mama Zion — a mystic poetess known around Trench Town for her powerful stage chants and spiritual healing sessions.

Produced by Brother Levi of Lion’s Gate Records, the album blended deep roots reggae rhythms with sacred Nyabinghi drums and ancestral chants, giving it a haunting, otherworldly tone. The sessions were said to be guided by “visions from the old spirits,” with Mama Zion often recording barefoot, burning frankincense, and singing in trance-like states.
