Sculpture resident Prudy Mattern is a multimedia artist based in Kalamazoo and a recent graduate of Kalamazoo College. By expanding the facets of sculpture and craft through combining bright colors and protruding forms, Mattern's work aims to celebrate sexuality, gender identity, and queerness more broadly within the domestic space and their respective crafts. Their work seeks to portray their own understanding of queerness as something that encapsulates sexual orientation and gender identity but also extends into a way of thinking, of living, of loving. Mattern adapts textiles and fibers as devices to embraced the deemed "inappropriate" or "embarrassing" parts of identities and bodies alike. The main stylistic themes of Mattern's work include age-old narrative art forms such as patchworking, crocheting, and quilting, which represent the creativity of queer people in their production of a livelihood that adapts to their desires. Mattern aims to emphasize that our environments and ways of thought are malleable, active agents within our lives. They embrace curiosity and exploration of the self while prioritizing work that connects others.
