Former University Professor Jailed After String of Retail Fraud Cases

Former Eastern Michigan University professor Leo Stringa, once praised by students online for his teaching, returns to Judge Simpson’s courtroom facing multiple retail fraud convictions, probation violations, and claims of severe medical problems.

Over the past year, probation reports show Mr. Stringa made no payments, completed no required testing or treatment, and continued to pick up new charges across several courts. His defense asks the court to spare him jail time because of his health and a pending return to teaching. Mr. Stringa insists the violations were misunderstandings, that he believed some cases were “time served,” and that his medical crises prevented compliance.

Judge Simpson isn’t persuaded. After reviewing the violations and hearing from probation, he revokes probation and imposes multiple 365-day jail sentences, with credit for time served. The judge offers the possibility of release to Dawn Farm inpatient treatment, but orders him immediately remanded.
