At the core of India’s latest hypersonic breakthrough is the scramjet engine. Unlike conventional jet engines or rockets, a scramjet has no moving parts, draws oxygen directly from the atmosphere, and burns fuel while airflow remains supersonic. During a recent DRDL ground test, India successfully sustained scramjet combustion for over 12 minutes under simulated hypersonic conditions. Conducted at DRDL’s Scramjet Connect Pipe Test Facility, the trial marks India’s transition from experimental hypersonics to weapon-grade capability, placing it among a small group of nations with proven scramjet expertise.
