While on holiday in Norfolk last week we visited Hickling Broad just about every day. On our final evening we walked to Stubb Mill at around 8pm to hopefully have a last look at the Common Cranes. Although we didn't see them we could hear them calling in the distance. On our way back to the car we encountered something we had never seen before, a pair of Bitterns in flight. We expected them to disappear into the reeds as they normally do, but they circled around and the male (the slightly larger bird) started neck stretching in mid air. He did this several times and we assumed it was part of their courtship ritual. We were totally transfixed for the fifteen minutes or so they were in the air. I thought you would like to see it too. I hope you enjoy the video.
