Building a Living Fence with Ocotillo

It is Mission Garden's honor to host Erik Meza of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona to learn how to use the native Ocotillo plant (genus, Fouquieria) for fencing and shade in your garden and home. The canes (stems) can be linked together to construct panels which keep unwanted critters out of the garden, or cast cool shade as a ramada roof. If the canes are fresh, they can reroot in the soil and become a "living fence"!
When harvested sustainably, the original plants do not suffer from some cuttings. Also, native ocotillos can be "rescued" from areas that are set to be developed, and we can make use of these special plants (check out Tucson Cactus & Succulent Society for more info: https://www.tucsoncactus.org).
