The Unknown War
Today, SouthFront shares the 15th part of the series titled “From the Balkans to Vienna”. With the Nazis collapsing, the Red Army began to advance in Romania late in August of 1944.
With the Soviets pressing on, the Nazis’ Antonescu puppet regime was overthrown on August 23. Just eight days later, the Red Army entered Bucharest.
On September 7, Soviet troops entered Bulgaria, where they were met with no resistance. By the fall, Hungary remained Germany's only ally and Nazi troops occupied its territory to prevent the Red Army from advancing. The desperate attempt to hold on to Hungary was costly for the Nazis however. They lost 128,000 troops. At least 138,000 others surrendered as prisoners as the Soviets entered Budapest on February 13 of 1945.
Next, the offensive on Austria was launched. The battle for Vienna was intense, though less destructive than that for Budapest. The Germans resisted desperately for a week, but finally surrendered on April 13.
