The middle of the twentieth century. Tired of a fictitious marriage, Renee, a young wife (Jane Fonda) of a rich financier (Michel Piccoli), starts an affair with her stepson (Peter McEnery). Unexpectedly for herself, Renee falls in love with Maxim and makes him an offer – she divorces her husband so that they can be together. However, the reaction of both the stepson and the husband turns out to be absolutely unexpected…
