Another Found recording! Peter Wyper on diatonic button accordion (or, Melodeon, as the diatonic button accordion is called), who was an acclaimed accordion player in Scotland in the early days of the 20th century. Side 1 is "Selections of Jigs," and Side 2 is "Selections of Hornpipes." Recording from 1918, in the Public Domain.
(More historical notes and sources below).
This particular recording sounds surprisingly good for its age (1918)! Also, we have to say that we never thought of jigs or hornpipes as being primarily played on accordion (melodeon); however, not only we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of sound, but we were also highly impressed by Peter Wyper's abilities. No wonder he, along with his brother Daniel, were considered the "Champion Melodeon Players of Scotland." (see sources below)
The label refers to this vintage 78 rpm recording as "Columbia Graphophone Company" as well as "Columbia Grafonola" with the catalog number A674.
Media is a 10" 78 rpm shellac record. Recorded in 1918.
From what history we've been able to locate, the Wyper brothers were recording quite early at a time when the recordings were rendered on wax cylinders. Peter Wyper was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1861, and lived until 1920.
In fact, here is a little bit of trivia for you to tuck away for further use someday: According to the Wiki entry (see below), historians believe that Peter Wyper may well have been the very first person to be recorded playing the accordion.
Here are a few bits of information we've been able to locate:
