STORYLINE:
Around three thousand US troops aboard three warships joined 250 Kenyan naval troops for a joint exercise on Wednesday on the Kenyan coast.
The manoeuvres known as "Edged Mallet," were planned long before the September 11 attacks as a part of a regional peace-keeping effort.
The marines and navy have set up base on warships in international waters off the east African coast.
