Can oocyte activation help in IVF?
A new meta-analysis of 45 studies (56,787 oocytes, 7,463 women) rigorously evaluated artificial oocyte activation (AOA) in ICSI cycles. While AOA may increase fertilisation rates for patients with prior fertilisation failure, it does not improve embryo development, pregnancy, or live birth rates. For most ICSI patients, routine AOA offers no significant benefit. These findings highlight the importance of evidence-based practice and informed patient counselling—emphasising that more fertilised eggs do not necessarily translate to higher pregnancy or live birth rates. As the field advances, targeted use of AOA in select cases, rather than as a blanket add-on, is recommended. Further high-quality research is needed to clarify benefits in rare subgroups and assess long-term safety. How is your clinic approaching AOA? Let’s discuss best practices. #IVF #Fertility #EvidenceBasedMedicine 🧬✨
