We talk about getting a Cancer diagnosis with my wonderful friend Stacey.
The moment you hear the word cancer — everything changes. It's as if the world stops, time stands still, and your mind races through a thousand thoughts. You want to deny it, fight it, or somehow make it disappear, but deep down, you know that life as you knew it will never be the same again.
The fear creeps in. What does this mean for me? For my family? How much time do I have? These questions spiral through your mind, often accompanied by a wave of disbelief. But after that initial shock, something unexpected happens. You begin to look at life differently. Your priorities shift, and the things that once seemed so important—like chasing after work deadlines or worrying about minor inconveniences—suddenly fade into the background.
What takes center stage is the now. The relationships that truly matter. The quiet moments with family, the simple joys of life, and the deep appreciation for each breath you take. It’s as if every day becomes a gift, a reminder that life is fragile and beautiful in ways we often take for granted.
Surgery is a major part of the journey. The decision to go under the knife is not easy, but it becomes a necessary step towards healing. The scars, both visible and invisible, will remain, but they serve as symbols of strength. As you recover, you lean on your loved ones in ways you never imagined. You realize how much you need them—and how willing they are to show up for you, no matter what.
There’s a raw beauty in asking for help, whether it’s for emotional support, physical assistance, or simply prayers. It’s humbling to admit you can’t do it all alone. The love and kindness that pour in from family, friends, and even strangers are a reminder of the incredible community around you. They hold you up when you feel weak, and in return, you learn the power of giving thanks for the people who walk beside you.
Through this experience, you see the importance of faith and connection. For some, it’s prayer; for others, it’s a deep reflection or a personal form of spiritual strength. Regardless, there’s a profound sense of peace that comes from knowing you don’t have to carry the weight of this journey alone.
In the end, cancer is not just a diagnosis—it’s a life-altering experience that forces you to slow down, re-evaluate your priorities, and live with intention. It teaches you that life is unpredictable, but it also shows you how incredibly strong you can be when faced with adversity.
So, if you’re in the midst of this battle, or know someone who is, take a moment to appreciate the beauty of this life. Ask for prayers, lean on your loved ones, and never forget how precious each moment truly is. And remember, you are never alone in this journey. We are all walking each other home.
