SO TIGHT! Wombwell & Westville Push Each Other to the Limit

The Sunday League FA Cup delivered another fiery clash as Wombwell Town (Barnsley Sunday League) took on Westville FC (Mexborough Sunday League) at Wombwell Recreation Ground!

Before kick-off, I caught up with Wombwell manager Martin and Westville secretary Rob about the importance of this competition and their ambitions for the season. Both clubs have strong histories in their leagues, but only one could progress to the next round!

On the pitch, the drama started early when a Westville long throw was headed into his own net by a Wombwell player… 0-1 inside the opening minutes! Wombwell responded brilliantly, creating several golden chances to equalise, but somehow failing to find the net. Westville clung on under pressure and went into half time 0-1 up.

With the wind behind them in the second half, Westville looked more comfortable, while tempers began to flare. A nasty tackle by Wombwell’s number 16 somehow only brought a yellow card a decision that left plenty in the crowd baffled followed by a small scuffle to turn up the heat even more!

In the end, Westville held firm to secure their place in the next round of the Sunday League FA Cup after a gritty performance.
