For almost 80 years, expeditioners have been travelling south as part of the Australian Antarctic Program.
It's a complex operation in a challenging environment, but each year, about 6,000 people apply for jobs on the ice.
About 300 make the cut, and while most only stay for summer, a smaller team remains throughout winter.
Antarctic reporter Jano Gibson and camera operator Owen Steer-James travelled to Casey Station with the support of the Australian Antarctic Program.
