Here is a performance of Robert Schumann's "Scenes from Goethe's Faust". Roland Kluttig leads the musical forces which feature Konstantin Krimmel (Faust); Tetiana Miyus (Gretchen); Wilfried Zelinka (Mephistopheles); and Mario Lerchenberger (Ariel). The entire cast is listed in the opening credits.
The great Austrian conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, on the occasion of a performance, said in an interview: "For me, this work is among the greatest works in music. In this absolutely unreal final scene, where everything spirals upwards in the air, in the mountains, I also see a strong connection to painting. In this third section, the depiction of redemption—actually a complete work in itself—I see a kind of attempt to create a secular German oratorio."
