What on earth, one might ask, is the point of reviewing a book that is fully 80 years old? The answer, in a word, is simple: it's timeless.
Unlike contemporary humour, which ebbs and flows with the vicissitudes of fashion - and often seems sadly dated - Wodehouseian humour is as durable as the day is long, and indelibly funny.
The Code of the Woosters, in which the redoubtable Jeeves joins forces with his hapless employer in a misguided imbroglio, involving his beloved Aunt Dahlia, Gussie Fink-Nottle, Sir Watkyn Bassett, and Aunt Dahlia's indispensable Chef, Anatole, who is about to be swapped for an 18th-Century cow-creamer, is the purest of froth, the likes of which has never been emulated.
Wodehouse's oeuvre, which tots up to 80-odd volumes - most of which, amazingly, is still in print - remains vintage fare of classic stature and consistent delight. This particular volume is a notable example.
British humour at its best.
