practise: 1.5h, attempts: 5.5h
Since this uses a lot of pause buffering, people with epilepsy or who are sensitive to flashing should be careful.
It was the worst grind ever. The hack itself was fun, and I had no particular complaints. When this hack was released, I wanted to play it, but I didn’t feel confident enough in my skills to try it at the time. Lately I haven’t been playing kaizo at all and didn’t really have any hacks to play, so I figured I’d give this one a shot. I practiced the thins, but unfortunately I couldn’t get them consistent. Because of the nerves and sweaty hands, I kept getting suffocated, so I used pause on every kick. It probably looks like terrible play, but as long as I got the star, that’s all that matters to me. First, the very first wall kick was extremely difficult, and it took me almost 1 hour to get it consistent. After that, the redmat wall into the QSLG was really painful.
I choked repeatedly because I hadn't practiced enough. Ultimately, I realized I had to kick the left side of the redmat wall, input stick right to the absolute right, and hold A continuously. If you get lucky, you don’t need perfect inputs, but if the kick timing is too early, your speed is too low, and then you need perfect stick input and perfect camera switching, which made it way too inconsistent to reproduce. The 44 degree wall kick before the QSLG after that was also really rough, and because I didn’t practice it enough, I got choked many times. Strangely enough, I never failed it at all in practice. And then the thins completely broke me mentally. The arch was awful. Even if it's stable in practice, it chokes easily in attempts. It was just too brutal, so I tried using the D pad. That made it so much easier. Getting choked out twice in a row by lava was pretty frustrating. So I practiced and found a more consistent strategy. I was an idiot for referencing other players' strategies. I should have found this strategy during my first practice session, and I wanted to punch myself. And I never expected the ending to be this painful. Just like the first wall kick, I decided not to use pause. On an N64 controller, if it use pause, you can’t keep holding A, so Mario slowly sinks down. Because of that height loss, the final wall kick ends up too low and you can’t land on the floor. In the end, I did it without pause, but my nerves were completely shot. My hands were so sweaty that I was constantly worried about my fingers slipping, and the tension was at its absolute peak. The reason I keep stopping so much at the thins is because I was wiping my hands with a towel over and over. Especially when I couldn’t get the arch at all, the stress and sweaty hands made me panic, and I completely lost the ability to make calm decisions and clean inputs. It was an absolutely awful grind, and it ended up taking two days. That might not sound like an insanely long time, but unlike something like a red coin star, it’s nothing but hard parts, repeated nonstop without breaks, so the fatigue feels totally different. It honestly felt like I played for over 10 hours, and during actual attempts it felt like an eternity, especially on thins. I’ve said this many times, but I’m retiring from kaizo hacks. I was basically already retired, but this one really pushed me over the edge. It completely wrecks me mentally, causes sleep deprivation, and starts affecting my real life. And when someone else gets the star while I’m still grinding it, it genuinely makes me angry. I'm not criticizing other players, you know?
Thank you, viper, for making the original playable to this extent. Kappa
I’m probably the worst player in the world and should just quit. Also, kaizo hacks suck.
