There's a small canyon just south of Little Cottonwood Canyon that goes right to the foot of Lone Peak: Bells Canyon. There are waterfalls here, and about 5 miles in (8k) is the upper reservoir.
From the trailhead on Wasatch Blvd, it's 2.5 miles (4k) to the lower falls. Bells Canyon Creek is not a huge creek, but it puts on a dramatic display at these falls. The descent from the trail to the foot of the falls is steep, so it's important to negotiate that slope carefully.
