The dance was devised by Robert Senior for Ian Stuart Gray whose great uncle Robert Scott Gray served in the Dandy Ninth. The 9th (Highlanders) Volunteer Battalion, formed in Edinburgh in 1900, was the only kilted battalion of the Royal Scots. It adopted the Hunting Stewart tartan, and this distinctive dress earned it the nickname of "The Dandy Ninth". Robert Gray was killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Music for the lead tune, Robert Scott Gray, was composed by Chris Dewhurst who is playing with Julie in this video. Ian Gray is dancing as 1st man.
