Brody Taylor Smith - Satyr - "Apogee" & "Perigee" - Drum Playthrough

I recorded this right before our back-to-back tours with The Fall of Troy & Intervals a couple months ago & just got around to editing it!

Ever since releasing Locus, we've played Apogee straight into Perigee exactly as I do in this video. I honestly wish that we had recorded it this way haha. We'd always envisioned the two songs as a pair, but for whatever reason, we never thought of how they should transition into each other on the album, but oh well. Now, whenever we finish Apogee there's always this cool moment where the audience begins to applaud but then we surprise them by directly hitting that big stab into the start of Perigee. That's become one of my favorite parts of the set!

These are definitely two of the wildest songs off Locus & I've always wanted to make drum playthroughs for them. Apogee was one of the only tracks that we started writing from scratch, together in person. Come to think of it, it's the only song on the album that started with me, Soup & JD all jamming together in a room. We wrote maybe the first minute of the song that day going up to the polymeter rhythm & then Soup & I sketched it out in Guitarpro & expanded on it later.

Apogee has a lot of crazy drum moments such as the main polymeter riff at 0:48 with the "1 &a" ride pattern added on top at 1:11. That rhythm in 21/16 (I know) that first appears under a 4/4 backbeat groove then becomes the full meter we play in at 1:27. We play off of it in various ways which make for some interesting moments. At 1:49 I play hi hat splashes with my left foot underneath the main groove. I'm hitting straight 8th notes where every other note is a regular hi hat chik or a hi hat splash. It is very difficult. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to hear in this video OR on the album lol. I also don't have a foot cam set up so you'll just have to take my word for it!

The 21/16 rhythm shows up in various places throughout the album so I think this track being the opener is a cool way of setting all of that up.

Perigee started out as a demo that Soup had written. It originally was quite different from what it ended up being & we met up in person & jammed on a few different parts to bring it to where it ended up. The riff at 3:26 was a lot different originally but once we'd finished Apogee, I thought it'd be cool to bring in the 21/16 rhythm & play it there instead of what had been there previously. The song rides on that riff for a while & then starts getting a lot more wild at the transition at 4:28. I love this whole song, but after that transition, I REALLY love it haha. It just has a really cool vibe & almost feels like a second opening to the album for me. The 21/16 rhythm shows up again at 5:08 & then at the very end of the track bringing everything full circle.

For the past year or two, I've been taking a pretty extreme "note for note" approach to playing songs. The parts I'm playing here are pretty much exactly what I played on the actual recording aside from a few small things I changed.
