AITAH for Beating Up My Older Brother After He Screamed at and Insulted Our Mom?

I’m 22M. My brother “Cody” is 26M. Growing up, Cody was the golden child — sports star, charming, got away with everything. I was the quiet one who got blamed when things went wrong. Cody has always had a nasty temper with our mom (60F), who’s the sweetest, most patient woman on earth. He screams at her over nothing, calls her names, throws things, storms out. Dad died years ago, so it’s just the three of us.

Last night was the worst ever.
Mom asked Cody (politely) if he could lower his music at 1 a.m. because she had an early doctor appointment. Cody lost it:
Called her a “fucking nagging bitch”
Told her “no one asked you to still be alive”
Threw a full bottle at the wall two feet from her head
Kept screaming “I wish you’d just die already”

Mom started crying and went to her room. Something in me broke.

I walked up to him, told him to apologize. He laughed in my face and said “make me.”
So I did.

I’m 6'3", 210 lbs, and I lift heavy five days a week. Cody is 5'10" and maybe 160 soaking wet. I put him on the floor in about three seconds, hit him hard enough that he has a black eye, busted lip, and was crying for me to stop. Mom ran out begging me to stop before I “killed him.” I let him go, told him if he ever speaks to her like that again I’ll do worse, and he ran out of the house.

He went straight to the police and tried to press charges (they laughed him out because there were no serious injuries and Mom refused to make a statement). Now he’s at our aunt’s house telling the entire family I’m a violent psycho who “almost murdered him over nothing.” Relatives are blowing up my phone calling me a monster, saying Mom didn’t want me to hit him, and that “he’s still your brother.” Mom is quietly thanking me but also scared of the fallout.

So Reddit, no sugarcoating:
AITAH for physically beating my brother after he verbally abused and terrorized our mom one too many times?
Or should I have stayed calm and let him keep treating her like garbage because “blood is thicker than water”?
