Friday, January 27, 2017, was the first time in several months that it's been light enough at dusk to catch the Amtrak Empire Builder departing Seattle. It's usually preceded by one of the NB Sounders.
After setting up the camera, I heard the crossing bells and expected to see the Sounder emerge from the portal, but to my surprise I was greeted by BNSF 8430 pulling a loaded coal train NB for the Roberts Bank Terminal in British Columbia.
As it passed, I panned the camera to the left and saw BNSF 7870, leading an intermodal train. Note NS 9872.
As I panned back to the right, I saw the NB Sounder waiting for the stack train to clear the crossover so it could proceed north to Everett.
By the time the Empire Builder came along, it was too dark to shoot video anymore, but it was now late. This video was in real time so all this action took place in about 12 minutes.
There are three grade crossings in this short stretch of Alaska Way and you can only imagine how backed up traffic was during afternoon rush hour!
As always, thanks for watching!
