Belum Caves, located in Nandyal district of Andhra Pradesh, is the second-largest cave system in the Indian subcontinent, spanning an impressive 3,229 meters (10,593 feet) in length. These caves are famous for their incredible stalactite and stalagmite formations, carved over thousands of years by underground water from the now-vanished Chitravathi River.

The deepest point of the cave reaches 46 meters (151 feet), known as Pataalaganga, where a mysterious underground stream disappears into the depths of the earth. Belum Caves, declared a Monument of National Importance, is one of the must-visit destinations for explorers and history lovers.

Historical Significance of Belum Caves

Belum Caves has been home to humans for centuries. Evidence shows that Jain and Buddhist monks lived in these caves over 2,000 years ago. Many Buddhist relics were found inside, now housed in a museum in Ananthapur. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) also discovered ancient remnants dating back to 4500 BCE, highlighting the caves' immense historical and cultural importance.

Robert Bruce Foote, a British geologist, first documented Belum Caves in 1884. Later, in 1982-83, German speleologist H. Daniel Gebauer led an expedition to explore and map the cave system in detail. His efforts brought global attention to the natural wonder, and the caves were eventually developed for tourism by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC).

Belum Caves Today – A Protected Tourist Attraction

In 1988, the Government of Andhra Pradesh declared Belum Caves a protected site. Then, in 1999, the APTDC took charge of its development, creating pathways, lighting systems, and fresh air shafts inside the caves. Today, 1.5 km (0.9 mi) of the cave system is open to the public, offering an incredible underground journey through nature’s formations.

APTDC also provides essential facilities like a canteen, restrooms, and a Haritha Hotel nearby for accommodation. If you’re visiting, you’ll find modern amenities that make your trip comfortable and convenient.

*Simhadwaram (Lion’s Gate)*– A natural arch of stalactites resembling a lion’s head.
Kotilingalu Chamber – This chamber is filled with thousands of stalactites resembling Shiva lingams. The surreal setting makes this one of the most visited spots in the caves.
Pataalaganga – A mysterious underground stream that disappears into the earth. It’s believed to reappear at a well in the nearby village of Belum.
Saptasvarala Guha (Musical Chamber) – Named for its stalactites, which produce musical sounds when struck.
Dhyan Mandir (Meditation Hall) – Once used by Buddhist monks for meditation. This chamber exudes a calm atmosphere, making it an ideal place for introspection.
Thousand Hoods – A section filled with stalactites shaped like cobra hoods, creating a stunning sight.
