During World War II, "APO" stood for "Army Post Office" and “FPO” stood for “Fleet Post Office.” These offices delivered mail to our sailors, soldiers, and Marines overseas. The practice did not begin during World War II. It goes as far back as the Franco-Prussian War in the 1870s. The United States employed a system of numbered army post offices during its role in the First World War.
