In this lecture I consider the Schwarzschild solution of the vacuum Einstein equations and state the Birkhoff theorem, which says any spherically symmetric vacuum solution (without cosmological constant) is static and equivalent to the Schwarzschild one. Some mathematical preliminaries are introduced that will help prove the theorem.
