Learn about the latest approaches to the discourse on Orientalism from scholars and cultural experts who participated in a panel discussion “Orientalism: A View from the East,” a part of Qatar Creates Public Talks during the QC Week in February 2024.
This session offered a critical analysis of Orientalism in art, emphasizing Eastern perspectives and highlighting the Lusail Museum’s future role as a think tank dedicated to exploring East-West relations in Doha.
The panel, moderated by Dr. Julia Gonnella, Director of the Lusail Museum, featured Sara Raza, curator and author of Punk Orientalism, Dr. Naida Radwan, Professor of Art History at the University of Bern, and Kholood Marzook Al Fahad, Acting Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs at Lusail Museum.
The conversation brought into focus the complexities of historical portrayals of the East and their persistence in contemporary discourse on Middle Eastern art. This panel provided a deep dive into the misrepresented narratives of the East and underscored the importance of critical reflection in art curation.
