The Hot spot method is most popular tool to defining weld in FEA. The weld geometry is modeled with a 45° chamfer.
Because of singularities at the weld transition, the hot spot stress is described using two or three stress values at specific reference points.
A simplification of the hot spot method is provided by Haibach's method. He suggests that the stresses are evaluated between 2-3 mm before the weld transition.
And the CAB method was developed at the University of Dortmund, in Germany - by the Chemical Apparats Construction working group.
The weld is replaced by a radius.
