Pilots were briefed on their targets, mechanics armed planes with torpedoes and bombs modified for the shallow harbor, and deck crews carefully positioned fighters, dive-bombers, and torpedo bombers for a rapid launch. At around 6:00 a.m., the carriers turned into the wind, and the first wave of 183 aircraft lifted off in tightly organized groups, forming up in the dim morning sky before heading south toward Oahu. The launch was executed with precision and silence, relying on practiced drills that allowed hundreds of aircraft to take off smoothly from the narrow decks.
