Dr. Lewis First talks about questions posed by parents about when to speak with children about the birds and the bees. He states there is no one specific time to have "the talk" with your child. It's a continual conversation from toddlerhood through adolescence.
Teach children proper names for their genitals. Also talk to your children about good touch and bad touch. Make sure you understand what your child is asking. Puberty can start at age 8 or 9 so that is a good time to discuss menstruation and also your own values about sexuality. This conversation should continue through adolescence and sometimes into adulthood.
Dr. First is a pediatrician at Vermont Children's Hospital at Fletcher Allen in Burlington, Vermont.
