The car park behind Ilford Town Hall has been in use for over 40 years. The demolition of houses on Oakfield Road in the early 1980s saw it expand only to be promptly curtailed when Clements Road was re-routed through part of it. (In the video it is stated that the two houses adjacent to the Town Hall were demolished in the early 90s. In fact they were demolished in 1986).
Since the 90s it has remained unchanged, but transformation is imminent as Redbridge Council embarks on a new Cultural Quarter for Ilford.
This includes the opening of artist studios in the Town Hall (which has been vacated for this purpose) with art organisation SPACE relocating its headquarters from Hackney to run it.
Alongside SPACE, a covered multinational food market will be constructed, run by Mercato Metropolitano. The car park will be closed from 18th November 2019 as work gets underway; the market having been granted a 5 year lease on the land to undertake its food-based social engagement operations.
