In the southern part of Costa Rica, in the Talamanca mountains, the Borucas still live a relative isolated life. As they were isolated during Spanish colonization, it preserved their culture to a large extent. Daily life reflects a self-sustaining agricultural village, supplemented by craft-making of these incredibly beautiful masks.
There are two types of masks that the tribe predominately creates, the first is the warrior mask, build on their success to repel the Spanish invaders and is celebrated every year at the end of the year and beginning of the new year. The second type of mask is the environmental mask, because Boruca's derive so much from the environment that they are in, they protect it by making masks of animals and insects that they wish to preserve. The artwork and sculpting that goes into mask making is incredible and it is an art that everyone can appreciate.
