サトウキビの絞りかすの使いみち ～バガスを混ぜて植林用苗木をつくる～

島の主な産物であるサトウキビには、絞汁後に残るバガスという副産物があります。ここでは、植林のために必要な苗木づくりへのバガスの利用事例を紹介します。
今回は、開発者、山寺喜成博士の考案による「保育ブロック」の技術を基にして、プラスティックポットを使わないで現地材料だけで苗木の鉢土部分を成形することに挑戦しました。島の土は、栄養分や有機物が少ないものがあり、植物を育てるためには何かを加えてあげる必要があります。そのひとつに島内の副産物が使われたら、資源の循環に役立たないだろうか？そんな気持ちも込めて、保育ブロックによる苗木づくりに島のバガスを使った方法をご説明します。島の土にバガスを混ぜて成形すると、ポットがなくても自立できるのです。

Sugarcane, the main product of the island, forms a residue called bagasse after extracting sugarcane juice. Here, we introduce another example of the use of bagasse for making saplings needed for afforestation activities.
Based on the ‘Soil-block’ technology invented and developed by Dr. YAMADERA Yoshinari, we tried molding the potting soil of the saplings using only local materials, without using plastic pots. Some island soils are low in nutrients and organic matter, and something needs to be added to grow plants. If by-products, such as bagasse, from the island could be used as one such material, wouldn't this help in the recycling of resources? With this in mind, we will explain how island bagasse is used to nurture saplings with the ‘Soil-block’. When bagasse is mixed with island soil and molded, it can stand on its own without any plastic pot.
