What's the Difference Between Leading and Lagging Indicators?

The technical analysis toolkit includes indicators that can loosely be separated into leading and lagging categories. Leading indicators are designed to anticipate a price movement by looking for a particular set of conditions, while lagging indicators are able to confirm when an inflection point has already occurred. How can we use leading and lagging indicators together to analyze the S&P 500 index?
