Begnas Lake | Second Largest Lake in Pokhara

Begnas Lake is a serene freshwater lake located in the southeastern part of Pokhara Metropolitan City, within the Kaski District of Nepal. It’s approximately 13 to 15 kilometers east of Pokhara’s city center, making it an easily accessible destination for both locals and tourists seeking tranquility away from the bustling city life . 

Covering an area of about 3.28 to 3.73 square kilometers, Begnas Lake is the third-largest lake in Nepal and the second-largest among the eight lakes in the Pokhara Valley, following Phewa Lake . The lake sits at an elevation of 650 meters above sea level and reaches a maximum depth of 10 meters . 

Surrounded by lush green hills and offering panoramic views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) mountain ranges, Begnas Lake provides a peaceful retreat for nature lovers . The area is less crowded compared to the more popular Phewa Lake, allowing visitors to enjoy activities like boating, fishing, and swimming in a tranquil environment .  

The lake also supports local livelihoods through caged fisheries and irrigation practices . A dam constructed in 1988 on the lake’s western outlet stream, Khudi Khola, helps regulate its water level . 

For those interested in visiting, Begnas Lake can be reached by bus, taxi, or even bicycle from Pokhara. Buses depart from Prithvi Chowk in Pokhara approximately every hour, with the journey taking about 1 to 1.5 hours .
