We visited Kerascoët in the Finistère region of Brittany in September 2024. It's a beautiful little village that is well worth visiting if you are in the area.
Kerascoët is a charming little hamlet of stone cottages with thatched rooves just 500 meters from the sea. The hamlet is free of cars but there is a car park just next to it where you can park easily.
The cottages were built in the 15th century in a traditional Breton style and are built in the local granite. The roofs are thatched with reeds though originally they would have used rye straw. Reeds are more durable and so these are used now.
As is traditional in the area the cottages usually have blue or red shutters. Each house is a little different and many have roses, hydrangeas, geraniums or other flowering plants growing next to them and adding to the charm. You will notice the end of two houses in particular where large granite blocks have been glued together and covered with a thatched roof. These granite blocks are monoliths and houses built like this are called "standing stone houses" and are unique in France.
After walking round the village you can walk to the coast and along the coastal path to the pretty Rospico cove. This is a particularly good beach for families with small children as large pools of shallow water are left when the tide goes out. There are rocky cliffs at the edges of the beach and rocks and rock pools to explore at the edges of the beach.
