The Gospel According to Jesus
Many modern teachers tell us that Luke 9:23-26 is not a passage that has anything to do with ultimate salvation. They reason that, because Jesus spoke so clearly of paying a price to follow Him, and because salvation is “by grace,” Jesus must have been speaking about a “deeper relationship” or “discipleship,” the latter of which they define as an optional step of devotion for everyone who is already guaranteed heaven. But both their fundamental premise about grace being “unconditional” and their interpretation of this passage are tragically deficient and misleading. This passage ends (according to Matthew’s rendition) with Jesus’ warning, “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds” (Matt. 16:27). Jesus’ gospel was vastly different than what is often passed off as the gospel today. Listen to learn more as we unpack Luke 9:23-26.
