The first treatment for sickle cell disease in over 20 years was rolled out to thousands of patients in England last October. Loury cried with joy when she was told that she was eligible for the treatment and now receives the treatment every month at Birmingham City Hospital. The drug – Crizanlizumab - has given Loury a new lease of life and has she has only experienced one painful crisis since starting the treatment, as opposed to around one per month before the treatment.
Loury now has more energy to entertain her five grandchildren and is keen to encourage others to take up the treatment.
