Betty Webb visited Germany in 1937 on an exchange; within 4 years she was back in England, and had signed up for the female army - the Auxiliary Territorial Service, before being selected to work at Britain's famous codebreaking centre, Bletchley Park. Sworn to secrecy, she held onto her wartime story until 1975. Nor did that story end at Bletchley Park - by 1945 Betty was the only British woman serving in America's Pentagon.
Perhaps even more remarkable, today she is 101 and lives entirely alone. Betty is to old age what Usain Bolt is to the 100 metres, she really is remarkable. I have known her for ten years, she is featured in two of my books - Bletchley Girls and Army Girls and every time I meet her I am reminded of what a spectacular human being she is.
