Hello :)
This is the transcription I've done of the Ed Motta song "Smile" (also called Marta) from his 2013 album AOR . The bass player on this track was Robinho Tavares.
You can find this transcription at Muzento when you sign up with an Advanced Lesson Plan.
So just this morning I came across a short video of Robinho Tavares playing this song, and wouldn't you know it, he plays it differently than the way I've been practicing it...haha! There's a C# that he plays on the 4th fret of the A string, whereas I've been practicing it with the C# on the 9th fret of the E string. Other than, I think I play it the same way as he him? I tried to play it the way he did today (when I was recording the video) and I kept messing it up! I've been practicing it for 10 hours the one way and it was really hardly to change it. It would probably take me another few hours to re-train myself to play it the other way, so I decided "I'm not going to worry about it" :) Think of it as an optional way to play it ;) I've notated it in the chart in the first section the way he plays it, and for the rest of the chart I notated it the way I played it in the video. It's funny how muscle memory can work :)
I was looking for a song that would give me a good challenge and where I could stretch out a bit (this one almost pulled me apart :)) And this one did just that. I enjoyed working on this one. It made me dig a little deeper and I had to take the time to build up my endurance to get through this one.
This bass part is all about trying to play the main lick the same every time. It's not too difficult to get it a couple times, but to play it through the whole song, it's a little tricky. What helped me get through it was to really try and focus in on the "melody" of the bass line and hear it in my head through the song.
There's a slur (hammer-on) between the "ah" of 2 and the downbeat of 3. I found that to be very important. It really helped me to hear the "melody" of the bass line and also give me just enough of a pause to keep my strength and focus. I found that if I tried to finger every note, I would start to fumble and get tired over time.
I made a practice video for working on the main part of this song. I created a drum beat where you can play the main 4 bar lick 4 times at five different tempos. You can find it here - • Smile (Marta) - Ed Motta - Bass Practice
Project songs like this are great to have and work on. They force you to take your time and monitor your progress.
I hope you enjoy it :) Don't forget to "Like" and "Subscribe" and thanks for watching :)
