Ein Volkslied aus Ostfriesland, Verfasser unbekannt, entstanden im 18. oder 19. Jahrhundert. Später wurde daraus auch ein Marschlied für Matrosen und Soldaten. Es wird auch heute noch bei Paraden gespielt.

A folk song from East Frisia, author unknown, originated in the 18th or 19th century. Later it became a marching song for sailors and soldiers. It is still played at military parades today.

Text:
Schwer mit den Schätzen des Orients beladen
Ziehet ein Schiff fern am Horizont dahin.
Sitzen zwei Mädel am Ufer des Meeres,
Flüstert die eine der andern leis ins Ohr:

Refrain:
„Frag doch das Meer,
Ob es Liebe kann scheiden,
Frag doch das Meer,
Ob es Treue brechen kann.“

Schiffe sie fuhren und Schiffe sie kamen;
Einst kam die Nachricht aus fernem, fernem Land.
Aber es waren nur wenige Zeilen:
Daß eine andre er auserkoren hat.

"Treue Geliebte", so schrieb er im Briefe,
"Treue Geliebte", so nannte er sie stets.
Ewige Treue, die schwor'n sie sich beide,
aber das Schicksal hat's anderswie gewollt.

Weitere Strophe:
Hart ist die Arbeit und groß die Gefahren,
Männer und Boote in stürmischer See,
sind schon so viel über Meer gefahren,
kehrten zurück in die Heimat nicht mehr.

English Translation:
Heavily loaded with the treasures of the Orient
Far away on the horizon a ship moves on.
Two girls are sitting on the seashore
One of them whispers to the other softly in the ear:

Refrain:
"Ask the sea
whether it can separate loved ones from one another
Ask the sea
whether it can end loyalty."

Ships that went and ships that came;
Once the message came from a land far, far away.
But there were only a few lines:
That he has chosen another one.

"Faithful beloved," he wrote in the letter,
"Faithful beloved," he always called her.
Eternal loyalty they swore each other
but fate wanted it differently.

Another stanza:
The work is hard and the dangers are great,
Men and boats in a stormy sea
So many have traveled across the sea
and never returned home.
