At nearly 1.5 years old, Journey already has had quite the....journey! She was hatched in September of 2019 on a beach in Garden City, SC. There South Carolina Department of Natural Resources nesting volunteers collected Journey to be a part of our "head-start" program. Unlike other tiny hatchlings, Journey now has a greater chance of surviving into adulthood. Whereas most sea turtle hatchlings have a 1 in 1,000 likelihood to grow into adulthood. Instead, we have provided Journey a safe and healthy home, free of pollution and predators! Since her arrive she has lived behind-the-scenes, but now she is large enough to move into her new habitat on display!
Riverbanks will continue to care for this growing sea turtle before she is released back out into the Atlantic Ocean later this year. Make sure to come visit Journey and see how much she's grown for yourself! Guests can see Journey, inside the Aquarium and Reptile Complex where she lives inside our Atlantic habitat.
