6G is Coming – But When?

6G, the next leap in wireless technology, is currently in the research and pre-standardization stage, with commercial rollout expected around 2030. Building on 5G Advanced, it aims to deliver up to 100x faster speeds through terahertz (THz) communication, AI native networking, and satellite integration. Global initiatives led by the ITU IMT 2030 framework, 3GPP, and agencies like the NTIA are defining standards, spectrum policies, and sustainability goals. Early 6G trials and prototypes will appear by 2028, while full scale devices and networks launch by 2030. Unlike 5G, which faced coverage gaps and inconsistent performance, 6G focuses on reliability, ultra low latency, and intelligent automation, merging communication with sensing and AI. Key use cases include remote surgeries, holographic entertainment, smart cities, autonomous transport, and immersive education powered by brain computer interfaces. Despite challenges like spectrum harmonization, high costs, and energy efficiency, 6G promises transformative societal and industrial benefits, connecting humans, machines, and environments in a seamless, intelligent network by the early 2030s.
