In 2009, Idaho BLM formed a partnership with the University of Idaho’s 4-H Extension program to develop a wild horse weanling training program. The goal was to design a program where youth, ages 12 to 18, could train young wild horse weanlings and further develop their horse handling skills while also increasing the adoptability rate for these horses. The partnership has been a shining example of success. Since the program’s inception, every weanling that has been trained has been adopted – that’s over 120 weanlings that have found good homes in Idaho or surrounding states. The 4-H groups have raised over $10,000 to support their programs—a true win-win for all involved. So how does it work? We’re going to follow the process from weanling pick up to the adoption event that will occur 6 – 8 weeks later when the weanlings will be shown during a county fair event and then offered for adoption.
