The REM, or Réseau Express Métropolitain, is a new rail project that is to connect the Region of Montreal and the Island of Montreal with frequent automated train service to multiple branches. At the time of this recording, these trains only went on the A1 from Brossard to Gare Central. It was cool sitting in the Foamer seat again and pretending I was the actual train driver.
1:00- REM overview
1:06- Planned Infill Station
2:39- EXO Rail yards
4:20- VIA Rail Canada yard. LRCs, Ventures, Renaissance, and Budd cars are stationed here.
Renaissance sleeper and coach cars have an interesting history. These were supposed to be built for the NightStar services for night running in the Channel tunnel between the UK and Europe (alongside the already planned Eurostar services), to destinations such as Cologne, Paris, Lyon, Amsterdam, etc. However, those plans fell through due to them being too optimistic. Meanwhile, across the pond, VIA rail was looking for new stock, so they bought the ENTIRE fleet from them in this circumstance. Here's Simply Railway's full review of them below:
• The Ocean by VIA Rail: 24 Hours in a Sleep...
6:43- Ill De Soeurs
6:55- LARGE doors
8:20- Bridge Crossing and Information
10:15: Automated networks and their benefits
11:58- Panama
15:46- Du Quartier
18:26- Brossard
